Escondido's Oldest Art Association and Operator of the Artists' Gallery

Welcome to the Escondido Art Association

The Escondido Art Association is dedicated to promoting fine arts in our community. Through our gallery on Grand Avenue we provide an outlet for our members and other local artists to display their work. We also host demonstrations by local and nationally known artists at our monthly meetings, providing a place for members to learn new techniques and socialize with fellow artists.

The EAA is active in the community of Escondido: hosting shows benefiting local causes, giving scholarships to local high school students, and even showing member artwork in downtown businesses. Anyone with an interest in the visual arts or the desire to support the EAA is welcome as a member!

Our gallery, The Artists Gallery, on Grand Avenue in Escondido, is open in the evening during the monthly Second Saturday Artwalk. We focus on representational art in all media. Admission is free and we offer a hosted wine bar and hors d'oeuvres. Come see the art and meet the artists!

Interested artists are welcome to call or pick up a trial membership voucher with a three-month expiration date entitling them to participate in the following benefits: monthly art competitions at the Artists Gallery with opportunities to show and sell their artwork at the same entry fees as fully paid members; monthly general meetings with free art demonstrations by notable guest artists; informal art competitions judged by guest artists at the general meetings with ribbon awards presented to the winners; and participation in a peer critique group held on scheduled Wednesday afternoons at the Artists Gallery on 121 Grand Ave, Escondido. For more information about the Escondido Art Association please visit our website at or call the Artists Gallery, (760) 489-0338.

The quarterly EAA Art Rotations have changed. Per July 1st, only one artist will be allowed to hang multiple pieces at either the US Bank or the Best Western Hotel. To apply for a slot at these locations, please contact Joan Segel.

The process is as follows;
The artist who has been assigned to show their art during the next period, contacts the artist currently showing at that location. They will arrange a meeting so that any equipment needed to hang the show is passed on. The artists may agree to help each other take down the show and hang the next. The duration of a show at the US bank and the Best Western Hotel is 2 months. The duration of a show at the library is one month, starting at the beginning of that month. For more information, please contact Joan Segel at the Artists Gallery, 760-489-0338, or at 760-741-3117.

Rent-an-Easel program

As of August 5th, the Rent-an-Easel program was introduced in the Artists' Gallery. This program allows artists to rent an easel located in the window of the Artists's Gallery. This location is considered highly desirable due to the high visibility from the street which will increase the probability to sell the art on display.

Up to five easels can be rented by one or more artists at any given time. The cost to rent an easel is $40 per month. The art on the easel can be swapped by the renting artist at their discretion. The art placed on the easel DOES NOT participate in the judged gallery show for that month. However, when an artist rents an easel, he/she can also add up to three works in the judged gallery show at a cost of $5 per painting.

For more information about this program, call Joan Segel at the Artists Gallery, 760-489-0338, or at 760-741-3117.

Dear Artists,

The Artists Gallery, owned and operated by the Escondido Art Association (EAA), now offers the opportunity for artists to exhibit their artwork on rented wall space.

Three (3) sections, each 7 1/2' wide x 4' tall hanging space, are available for rent on a monthly basis. The price per section is $60/per month. Should you wish to rent all three (3) spaces, the monthly rent will be $150. The three sections are located at the rear of the gallery. The back wall allows for excellent display and is perfect for a private showing of multiple pieces of artwork.

The rental period would correspond with an EAA monthly juried art show. The artwork displayed in the rental space will not be included in the monthly art show judging.

If sales of your work ensue, the EAA will collect the sales tax and reserve a commission of 15%. Your artwork should be priced accordingly.

Membership is not required.

Please contact the Gallery Director, Joan Segel,

Phone: (760) 489-0338 or email: for further information.

A rental Agreement will be entered into between the exhibitor and the Escondido Art Association (EAA).

Upcoming Art Demonstration

April Demo Artist

Kazuaki (Kazu) Uehara

Kazuaki Uehara

About the Artist:

I was born on the Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan as the youngest of nine siblings. My parents moved to Tokyo when I was still small. My three year older sister and I joined them in Tokyo a few years later. I came to the United States after finishing High school assisted by another sister, who married an American soldier. My first job was in a Japanese restaurant. After 20 years in this job I decided trying an artist career with the first attempt being portrait sketches of visitors at Disneyland.

Walking my dog I feel two-dimensional. At the street crossing I push a button and a recorded voice commands “Wait! . . . Wait! . . . Wait!” until the signal allows me to walk. From the other side of the street another voice counts down “Six! . . . Five! . . . Four! . . . Three!” I am under somebody else’s control. I am like the tip of a pencil on a two-dimensional surface. My time and space is totally controlled. I have no choice, because depth is not a possibility. I am on a flat surface.

My demonstration will focus on providing a three-dimensional experience using a two-dimensional surface.
